AL-Jazirah Chair for International Journalism

 

Introduction

 

The chair was set up by an agreement inked between King Saud University and Al-Jazirah Newspaper to establish the first media chair kingdom-wide. It beefs up the research process in specialized media and journalism. It brings benefits to media and academic institutions, particularly Al-Jazirah Newspaper. It will upgrade the performance standard of the staff members honing up their skills to keep them up with the recent updates in the international press.

 

An international visiting professor from the USA, having the required academic background and professional expertise, has been assigned to supervise the research activities and training courses conducted to a galaxy of researchers and postgraduates.

 

Chair time frame

 

The chair timeframe is four years that may be renewed.

 

Strategic Objectives

 

The objectives of Al-Jazirah chair have been spun off the strategic objectives of King Saud University. They are closely-knit with media and journalism research stressed within the chair program.

 

Following is a brief summery of objectives:

 

1.      Beefing up the research process in local and Arab academic research centers;

2.      Establishing an annual up-to-the-minute database on the Saudi journalism;

3.      Compiling references and bibliographic lists on the past studies that tackled the Saudi press at the local, Arab and international levels. It shall service the chair research program, postgraduates, researchers, the Saudi media corporations and the academic associations kingdom-wide;

4.      Providing the media library with studies and researches on the local, Arab, and international press;

5.      Conducting the annual academic researches on the Saudi press, in general, and Al-Jazirah Newspaper, in particular, as far as journalistic connotations and Saudi readers' viewpoints are concerned;

6.      Beefing up the academic research in the mass communication departments in Saudi universities and encouraging the faculty to conduct more research work;

7.      Benefiting from the academic expertise and Arab and international professionals to achieve the program objectives;

8.       Co-training the mass communication undergraduates and developing the skills and capabilities of those who serve as liaison at Al-Jazirah newspaper through conducting more training programs.

 

Chair Professor

 

Professor John Hartman, a faculty in the Central Michigan University, has been selected to be chair the professor.

Direction

 

Al-Jazirah program is directed by Dr. Ali Al-Karni, an associate communication professor in mass communication department, and the head of chair committee that comprises a number of professors and researchers.

 

The annual program of the chair runs as follows:

 

1.          Scheduling frequent visits to the KSA will by the chair professor to conduct workshops and training courses;

2.          Organizing the annual symposium to Al-Jazirah Chair for International Journalism in December every year. Professors; experts; researchers in journalism will partake in the workshop with studies, researches  and lectures from inside and outside the kingdom.

3.          Holding a series of lectures

Some figures of academic and professional expertise at the Arab and international levels will be selected to give lectures on certain topics of journalism. The same goes for workshops which will function as a springboard for the theoretical and practical activities of the chair.

4.          Working out a scheme to run an annual study on Saudi journalism: “An Analytical Study on Forms and Connotations of the Saudi journalism” and “The readership of Al-Jazirah newspaper: A Survey Study”

5.          Chalking out research schemes on the Saudi, Arab and international journalism by the faculty of journalism and mass communication.

6.          Mapping out a scheme on writing year-round series: “Studies on Saudi Journalism” by a galaxy of mass communication professors

7.          Planning out a scheme on translating a number of  books on editing and profession-oriented development

8.          Making a program of hosting professional journalists from the Gulf, Arab and international press.

9.          Working out a program to organize periodic visits by students to the Saudi, Arab, and international newspaper headquarters and organizing annual visits by the chair students to an Arab or international newspaper every year in summer;

10.      Contesting to win Al-Jazirah Newspaper Chair Prize for International Journalism

The chair will bestow a prize upon researchers conducting the best researches on the Saudi, Arab, and international journalism. Researchers will present the researches in the annual symposium;

11. Conducting a training program for Al-Jazirah chair designed for Al-Jazirah members of staff, male and female undergraduates of KSU and other journalists kingdom-wide.
